Living the Dream!

At the end of April I was beginning to wonder just how long it was going to take to get enough work to keep the shop going. By the first week in May, the shop was booked a month in advance and I am having to consider hiring someone part time.

So many cool things happened this month. Paul managed to solo and did a fantastic job. I took off in the Clipwing so I could experience it from the air. He is a natural- made the 1000′ turnoff every time. Very proud of you Paul!

Pablo brought the Pitts back for a new header tank and some avionics work. I felt almost like I was building it again as  everything had to come out to do a neat install. It has been nice to have my old plane here but even better to have made such a good friend. Pablo is already talking about a constant speed prop in the near future- I say we just install a 540.

Craig trusted me with his super nice Clipped Wing Cub. We installed a new seat and did the annual inspection. This Cub is unique in that it has the seaplane door. I can’t think of a better view on a warm evening.

Cristy jumped in and helped get the new Clipwing T wings started. She was new to the scroll saw but once she figured out that she would have to work hard at loosing a finger she was off and running. We managed to get all the nose ribs done and we now have 4 ribs framed up. Sure is nice having good, free, beautiful help;-)

Old faithful was in need of an annual so she got some much needed lovin. I still say this is the best flying Cub I have ever been in. She is really strarting to show her age- I’m thinking some new fabric might be in order soon. I just hope that if we get to restore it we do not ruin the way it flys. It is like an old pair of boots.

Back when I graduated Avionics school I told myself I would never touch anything with a wire going to it. Funny thing is that half my shop time this month was spent installing new cool avionics. Dale has one of the nicest RV-7′s I’ve ever seen. He decided that he had just a little too much empty panel space and not enough toys. He also had a goal to have more screens than a 777. I installed a new Garmin 796 and fabricated a neat little panel mount for it. I can’t wait to fly it!

I never wish bent airplanes on anyone. I’m just glad that it happened here and that I get a chance to make it new again. We are all set to repair this Super Cub to better than new. Burlington is home to some of the best Cub pilots and mechanics in the US. We will have it flying in no time.

Back in February the Hangar 9 Taylorcraft came in from Washington State. We spent a few months working the bugs out of it and getting it rigged properly. I feel very fortunate to have been able to fly such a unique airplane. It is amazingly fast due to all the fairings Jim Moss made when he built it. I saw speeds of 140 mph at 2500 RPM. We advertised it for sale and through that process met another aviation friend and worked out a deal for an Extra 230. The Tcraft will still be here another month or so as I complete all the aerobatic flight testing and install a few goodies for the new owner Michael.

In the next few weeks we will get the new Extra 230 in, start on the Super Cub repair, annual the nicest Pacer on the planet, weld up a new clipwing Tcraft fuselage, finish the aerobatic testing of the Hangar 9 Tcraft, work on a Stinson Gullwing and who knows what else. Man this beats riding pine at the FAA!  Thanks again to all my customers, friends, and most of all my family. Without you guys I’d be nothing.

Hangar 9 Taylorcraft Flys

After a few months of tweaking, lost parts, and some new hardware the Hangar 9 Taylorcraft flew again. Its no secret that we have a soft spot for these legendary performers- this one is no different. The big Lycoming really pulls hard. I can’t wait to expand to some aerobatics in it this weekend. We are planning to advertise it for sale in the next week or two- after I wring it out!

New Restoration Scheduled!

Bucker Jungmeister

In our little corner of aviation, there are a few airplanes that set the standard in which all others are measured. The Bucker Jungmeister has been referred to as the Stradivarius of airplanes. It’s control feel and harmony made it a favorite of airshow performers all over the world.

Howard Davenport of Kampala, Uganda knows this well because he owns one of these special airplanes. Howard is as cool as his airplane and he is trusting us to restore it. We are anxious for its arrival and plan to post project updates along the way.

Rarely seen Clipwing Taylorcraft on the way

Thanks to Jim Jenkins and the other fine folks at the Skagit Aero Museum, we recently purchased one of the most famous, yet rarely seen Clipwing Taylorcrafts ever. Wild Bill of Deland Barnstormers is bringing it all the way from Washington State. Once here we will re-assemble it and start prepping it for competition season. We plan to fly in 4 contests and also to Oshkosh in 2012.

This airplane is a perfect fit for us- we specialize in award winning Clipwing Cubs and Taylorcrafts.

We currently have 2 sets of extended Taylorcraft landing gear under construction. Check the projects page for progress!

First Official Month in Business

Air Force Addie

January marked our first official month in business. It was a month of new beginnings, new friendships, new customers, and a few goodbyes. Our oldest daughter shipped off to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. We threw a big “Shin Dig” and in true airport fashion, decorated the hangar for her going away party. Many of her close friends and family came by- it was a very proud moment for all of us. Addie will be attending tech school for Cyber Security. She always was a computer nerd and she has always loved aviation. What a perfect fit.

Happiness is a full hangar!

Thanks to Rich Pease, we managed a very productive month and already have a great start on February. Rich is a very talented mechanic and we are lucky to have him- even if it is just part time.

On January 20th we lost a very close friend here at the airport. Tom “G Man” Coble was called home to be with the Lord. Tom was such an inspiration to so many here at the airport. He was instrumental in helping me get the courage to leave the FAA and persue my dreams. We honored Tom with a 4 ship formation and a missing man at his graveside service. Because the “G Man” would have had it no other way, I got the privilage of doing 3 consecutive snap rolls as I headed west, tears running down my face the entire time.

Tom "G Man" Coble

I want to thank our customers for giving us a chance. Thank you Vic, Bob, Bill, Jim, Barney, and Tom. I hope you keep coming back because I need your money ;-)

I will end this post with the words that were on Tom’s L39. I pray that I have the courage to let my faith and business co-exist like his did.

“Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World, Let Him Be Yours Today”

Late nights in the shop

If machines could talk . . . . . . .

Something about shadows cast among old flying machines makes you think about all that has happened since their first flight.

Historical Monocoupe N18166

Ludtke family

What an exciting week for us here at the hangar. We were very fortunate to locate and purchase a historically significant Monocoupe a few months ago. In less than 3 weeks it will arrive here in NC all the way from California.

“Fearless” Freddie Ludtke flew this 1940 Warner powered Monocoupe in airshows for over 20 years on the west coast and Alaska. The entire Ludtke family has been so helpful in getting us the historical information we need to restore it to it’s former glory.

Pablo Branco – Pitts N411EM

“Having worked with Eric Minnis and Bully surely gave me the best experience I could expect when going out to buy my first airplane.

When it comes to choosing an experimental aircraft, specially an S1 model Pitts being probably the most modified project ever, there is a lot to look into and of course, lots of catches and things that may frustrate and cost you a good bunch of dollars down the road. I was specially concerned on finding a good match of plane/owner, and by that I mean a plane in good state and also an owner that would have as much knowledge as possible regarding his craft and it’s past. I didn’t want to buy an aerobatic aircraft and be afraid of flying it just because I couldn’t tell accurately what was underneath the rag and the cowl. All that in addition to my inexperience as a purchaser makes me feel very fortunate to have met Eric and his company!

N411EM

Pablo Branco and N411EM

N411EM wasn’t even advertised when I drove up toBurlington, and I can say it didn’t take much to be sure I had found my Pitts. Glad it all worked out perfectly, from pre-buy, to payment, to all the support I continuously get from Eric. The airplane flew straight as an arrow since the very first flight and the only thing I had to do, so far, was give it a brand new polish and waxing so it looks even better thenit already did! If I need anything, it takes me a phone call, email or text message, and I’ll get fixed up with those guys.

Thanks Eric, Thanks Bully!”

Pitts S1-S N411EM

Pitts S1-T N411EM

Pitts S1-T N411EM

N411EM is a Pitts S1-S that received a set of rebuilt S1-T wings with plywood leading edges, and new slave struts and I-struts built from scratch.  After being fully rebuilt, the wings were recovered and painted in the traditional Pitts paint scheme.

New cabane struts were built and carefully installed on the fuselage.

After a thorough re-rigging, the airplane flew perfectly on it’s first flight.  In the process, 127 pounds were shaved off the airframe, turning this Pitts into a real performer.
